A Place For Words: Four Star

What happened?

Visual artist, Jenny Graham, worked with Bristol based performance poet, Ralph Hoyte on a project exploring rural independent garages in the Sedgemoor area of Somerset.

The project – part of Somerset Art Week's ‘Landmarks’ project, 2006 – produced an exhibition of images and words and a series of bumper stickers. Ralph also recorded performances of his pieces which were made available on a project DVD.

Jenny commented about working with Ralph:

"His textual response added a wealth of layers to my visual one and his quirky way of looking at the world and the people who live in it enlivened my passion for a different sort of ‘colour’.  It also convinced me that collaborating with a writer is an avenue of practice that I want to explore again as soon as possible."

Working with a writer added another element to the project. Jenny commented that people relate to words and images differently and to combine the two allows for a richer audience experience.

What made it work?

  • A good working relationship and commitment to collaboration between the artist and writer. Both created their own response to the subject matter rather than trying to illustrate each other's work.
