The Live Writing Series

Tomorrow, Friday 1st November, I’m taking part in The Live Writing Series.

Brainchild of writers Gemma Seltzer and David Varela, The Live Writing Series invites 7 writers over 7 weeks to react, compose and immerse themselves in a public place, bringing it alive with the real-time broadcast of their work for all to see.

You can catch every keystroke, dramatic pause and perfectly crafted sentence as it happens online. You’ll also have the chance to make requests and suggest ideas that may become part of the live piece.

I will be at Woolfson and Tay Bookshop (39 Bear St, London, SE1 OUH) weaving together audience suggestions and ideas from the bookshop and its environs into my narrative. If you’re in the area, do drop in between 11.30 and 6.30 (I’ll be having a break from 3-4) and get involved (plus there are books to buy and coffee to drink and cakes to eat), or visit www.livewritingseries.com to watch the stories unfold online.

In Between: the conversation

Alongside fabulous writers Aoife Mannix, Yemisi Blake and Joseph Coelho, I will be reflecting on All Change’s In Between project 2009-2012– an innovative programme, which aimed to deliver high quality community-based writing residencies in North London – with young people, street-traders at Whitecross Street Market, and a Turkish-speaking women’s group – and to critically evaluate their impact. We will be reading from 4 unique publications and discussing the project at Fix Coffee, 161 Whitecross Street, Shoreditch, London, Monday 13 May 2014, 6-8pm.

Brenda: Weren’t you with that police man?
Me: No.
Brenda (holds her hand over my forehead): Yes it was you, with that policeman.
Care-worker: There was a woman, who came in with a police officer. You maybe look a bit like her.
Brenda: Is it hard to be in the police?
Me: I’m not in the police.
Brenda: I’ve seen you before.
Me: Well maybe I look like her, that woman. I was on the bus with you a few weeks ago.
Brenda: Yes, you were placing things around the edge, that’s right. I thought so.

Every Street Has A Story To Tell

In February- March I worked with people at Justlife, a Community Interest Company in Openshaw, Manchester who aim to raise the aspirations of vulnerable people by opening doorways to healthcare, treatment, housing and employment. Every Street Has A Story To Tell is a project run by Small Things celebrating local stories and creativity in East Manchester. I blogged about each session on the project website and some of the writing created was showcased at Beswick Library at a community celebration on 6th April 2013.

Sam is working hard on the final pieces and the trail will be launched at Earlsfield library on Friday 3rd May 2-5pm. Take a look at the work so far on Sam’s blog.

Working The View

From 2011-2013 I have collaborated with my brother, a fantastic landscape photographer,  on a project exploring the relationship between the landscape of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and its guardians. In May 2013 we will publish a book and host an exhibition featuring 40 views of the Park chosen by people who own, care for and manage the landscape. Each participant shared their stories of and passion for the place with me, and each image is accompanied by a text expressing these. The Working The View exhibition launches on Wednesday 15th May at Craven Art Gallery in Skipton.  The book will be available to buy from that date, keep an eye on the project website for details or like the Working The View Facebook Page.

My London Story App

My London StoryMy London Story is an app and website that geo-locates non-fiction, long-form stories about the city.

They publish 10 original stories every two months and illustrate each with original photography. The idea is that, over time, they’ll build a unique portrait of London through quality, experiential writing.

I have a piece included in the first ‘edition’. Down The Elephant was written as part of Home From Home, a collaboration with photographer Eva Sajovic, exploring Elephant and Castle in South London through portraits and stories.

NEW MEDIA WRITING PRIZE

Window by Katharine NormanI was honoured to be asked to sit on the judging panel for this year’s New Media Writing Prize, run by Bournemouth University and If:Book. We had a great shortlist of seven pieces, and chose Window by Katharine Norman as the winner. Window is a beautiful, contemplative piece, dedicated to the memory of John Cage, which explores the nature of sound, time and place; I can’t recommend it highly enough.

CREATIVE INTERSECTIONS: Collaborations between artists and academics

I’ve been lucky enough to be involved in Creative Intersections this year. Creative Intersections is a pilot project within King’s Cultural Institute’s Creative Futures programme, curated by The Royal Society of Arts (RSA), that partners artists with academics from different departments within Kings College London.  This project focuses upon what is needed to enable small organisations or individuals to engage with higher education – but also what creates connections across often diverse academic disciplines.

My group explored how we experience and articulate place (See Group 3 at: https://creativeintersections.wordpress.com/what-have-we-been-doing/). It has been a fascinating and delightful process, and there’s a wealth of information about the project and the wider context on the project blog: https://creativeintersections.wordpress.com/.
